Nagula Chavithi is the festival of the serpent gods (Naga devatas). It falls on Chaturthi, the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Karthika Masam, a few days after Deepavali. Families pray for the long life and health of their children and family, and for protection from snakebite.
Many Telugu families keep the serpent festival on this day in Karthika; others keep Nagula Panchami in Shravana.
Families bathe early in the morning, and many fast until the puja is done.
They go to a snake mound (putta), often near a temple or in a field, worship it with turmeric, kumkum and flowers, and pour milk into it. Where there is no putta, they worship a stone Naga idol, or a silver serpent at home.
The naivedyam is chalimidi (rice flour and jaggery), chimmili (sesame and jaggery), vadapappu (soaked moong dal) and bananas.
So that no creature is harmed, many avoid cutting vegetables, digging the soil and frying on this day. Children light the crackers left over from Deepavali.
The start of Kartika, Shiva's holiest month. People bathe early, light lamps every evening, and many keep the Kartika Somavaram fasts.

Nagula Chavithi is on Friday, November 13 in India; in the USA it depends on the city.
A festival is kept on the day whose sunrise falls in the right tithi. Sunrise in America comes about 10 hours after sunrise in India, so the tithi at sunrise can differ and the festival can fall a day earlier or later. Always go by your own city’s date.
The Teluguvaari Calendar app sends an alert the evening before or the morning of every festival you choose, with the date for your own city. It is free, with no ads.
